Case Study - Joanna
“Habyts helped me limit my daughter's usage without having to physically remove her tablet from her.”
Joanna was one of our early Habyts Testers. Here is how she used Habyts to help manage her daughter’s use of Minecraft.
Life Before Habyts
My 10 year old daughter was (and still is) obsessed with Minecraft! Whether it is playing Minecraft on her tablet, on the laptop, on the Xbox or watching Minecraft videos on YouTube — it was ALL the time!
A regular user of tech, she always easily pushed the boundaries when it came to the amount of screen time she had. She’d wear headphones which amplified the issue of not being able to get her attention.
I would discuss the amount of time allowed but then have to remember to say when the time is up. I would obviously forget, and my child would take advantage of me forgetting and continue using them!
Life After Using Habyts
The concept of being able to control my child’s screen time using this software is great. [Habyts] has also encouraged my daughter to help out in the house, completing her tasks which gave her screen time. My favourite thing is that Habyts limits my daughter’s usage without having to physically remove her tablet from her.
How We Did It
Joanna used the Tasks section of Habyts to encourage good habits with her daughters use of tech. She did this by setting up tasks such as, feed the gerbils, load the dishwasher and unload the dishwasher.
When you go to the Tasks section and add a Task you will find a list of tasks that you can choose from or you can set your own.
Why did you rate Tasks 5/5?
“[Their] easy to use and adapt. Also, [Habyts] gave you a start point of the sort of tasks to use.”
For Joanna, her biggest challenge was getting her kids to stop switching between electronic devices. To stop them spending all their time on one device and then switching to another she used Habyts Play Time.
In Play Time you can set a screen time allowance that can be used across all the devices Habyts is registered on. This Play Time can be used within the child’s screen time schedule unless they have Study Time or Tasks to complete first.
You can also manually record spent on other devices that aren’t registered with Habyts; it’s then automatically subtracted from your child’s total Daily Play Time Allowance.
Your family is free of screen time battles, homework hassles, and chore wars. Distracted children are motivated. Daily routines are established. Family life is fun again. Now… open your eyes… watch the video and see what we believe in…
