Simple and Fun Photography Projects for Kids

“You’ll have so much joy watching them create beautiful and creative pictures.

Ashley Lipman |

If your child’s getting bored with doing the same thing every weekend, you should give them a new project to work on. We all own smartphones that have high-quality cameras that your kids can use for some fun.

When children learn about photography, it expands their creative minds. They’ll be able to see the world through a different lens, communicate their feelings in a new way, and help their self-esteem.

Instead of just giving your little one your phone and letting them do what they want, they’ll be more excited when it’s a project. If you’re stuck on what to do with them, we’ve put together some of our best ideas that are both simple and fun.

Unconventional Selfie

We all know about the traditional selfies with a fun filter or a silly face; however, there are other ways to take one. Some of the best selfie ideas are unconventional.

One example you and your child could do is use shadows on a sunny day to capture a different type of photo. Another thing you can do is take selfies with varying types of lighting. Use a flashlight for drama, candles for softness, or try with colored lights.

Another fun project is to take a few regular selfies, then have your kid cut them up and put their face back together with a Picasso look. The options are endless.

Look for Reflections

Some of the most beautiful photographs are those with reflections. Ask your kid to look for natural ones in the water, windows, or other reflective surfaces. This can be an ongoing project.

This activity can prompt you two to go on hikes together or spend the afternoon downtown looking for the best shot. You’ll create quality time with your child and have fun together.

Photography Scavenger Hunt

If you have more than one little one running around, making a scavenger hunt for them is a great way to get them to do something together. They can work as a team and bond, or work as competitors.

The photography scavenger hunt can include finding objects around the house or displaying certain techniques. For example, some items on the list can be “find something purple,” “find something that’s living,” or “use light to create drama in a photo.”

At the end of the scavenger hunt, you can put together a small slideshow of the images and watch together as a family. Everyone can vote on their favorite pictures and talk about the experience. The winner can get an extra snack after dinner.

The Bottom Line

Doing quality activities with your little ones will help create a strong bond between you. They’ll have these memories and photos for the rest of their lives. These experiences can inspire them to become a photographer one day.

Some fun and simple photography ideas you can do with your children are taking unconventional selfies, looking for reflections, and going on a scavenger hunt. You’ll have so much joy watching them create beautiful and creative pictures.
